    在美国,传统的学年是从九月到六月。暑期学校曾一度被视作高考不如意的考生们复读的的地方，但是现在已不仅局限于此。在学年中的任何时间，学生们都可以经常去暑期学校重修或选修一些科目。同时，也使得学生们有较为自由的空间去在接下来的学期中选择自己想要涉猎的科目。
    暑期学校的学生做着和其他学校全学年相同的功课，但是他们是在短短的一到两个月时间内完成的。他们通常每天早晨到学校学习三到四个小时，一周五天课。也可以选择接受远程教育（网络授课，网络教学）的学习方式。学生们可以在家里的电脑前面或者在任何一个可以联网的环境中听取远程课程。甚至可以是在与家人旅行的途中。然而，一些网络课程要求学生到学校的教室里接受测验。学生有时候也不得不在网上参加与老师一起的小组讨论，或是每天得花费几个小时在线。老师们说，高考失利的那些学生可能会觉得网络授课比在教室里重新学习那些以前的知识更容易一点。譬如说，他们会更愿意通过邮件的方式来向老师提出疑问。但是老师同时也指出，参加网络教学学生必须具备独立完成课业的能力。
    学生可以通过当地的教育机构学习，也可以选择网上的私人学校。家长必须保证网校是已被教育机构认证过的合法教育机构。如果不合法或者没被认证的话，当地的教育机构就不要让这样的网校继续进行网络教育。
