两个男人生病住院。他们住在同一个病房。其中一个人每天下午可以在床上坐起来一小时。他的床紧挨着房间里唯一的一扇窗户。另外一个人只能每天躺在床上，不能起来。

每天下午当男人靠窗坐起来的时候，他会向他的室友描述他能从窗户向外看到的一切事物。“公园里有一片美丽的湖泊。鸭子和天鹅在湖面上游荡，还有孩子们在湖面上滑行着他们的船模。年轻的恋人们手挽手的在花丛中散步。”当男人在描述这些场景的时候 ，另一个躺在床上的男人就闭上眼睛想象这些美妙的场景。
一天早上，窗边的男人去世了。然后另外一个男人就搬到了那张靠窗的床上。他看向窗外，尽最大的努力去找寻那美妙的场景，但是那里看出去只有一面白墙！他问他的护士为什么他的室友要向他描述窗外那番美丽的场景。护士告诉他，他的室友是个瞎子，连那面墙他都看不到的。
